Together, We Can Break the Cycle of Violence

Only 18 and pregnant, “Katie” was emotionally and physically abused by her older, drug-addicted boyfriend. Beaten down, fragile and frightened, she felt trapped by invisible chains.

On one particularly violent day, he tried to drown her and wouldn’t let her put on dry clothes. What was intended to be a punishment turned into Katie’s saving grace. When she showed up at school completely drenched and shaking, her teacher convinced her to get help.

Taking a Stand on Domestic Violence

By now, we’re all accustomed to seeing professional athletes and other high-profile people make headlines for all the wrong reasons.

During the first week of October, an NBA player and three martial-arts fighters were either charged, arrested or punished by their sport for alleged domestic violence incidents. A gubernatorial candidate in Oregon even made the ill-informed comment that educated, well-off women are “not susceptible to this kind of abuse.”
